About KIPP NYC

KIPP NYC is a network of free, open-enrollment public charter schools preparing students for success in college and in life.

KIPP Students

The KIPP Promise

In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in the south Bronx. We set a goal to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in life — and in so doing, to prove what is possible in urban schools. We promised to do whatever was necessary to help our students succeed, and we asked them, and their families, to make the same commitment.

Nearly 25 years later, KIPP NYC is still making and keeping those promises to our current roster of students. Across 13 schools we serve 5,298 KIPPsters — 90% are from low-income families and 97% are African American or Latino. We also actively serve 1,720 high school and college-age alumni on the path to and through college.

Growth

In the last nine years, we’ve embarked on a major expansion to create a powerful kindergarten-through-college continuum of services. In 2009, we opened the KIPP NYC College Prep High School to serve the students who graduate from our middle schools and to ensure they attain the highest levels of college readiness. Each of our five middle schools have an elementary program, bringing KIPP inspiration, dedication, and preparation to our students’ first years in school. In 2018, we opened our 12th and 13th schools, KIPP Freedom Elementary and KIPP Freedom Middle School, in the Bronx.

A History of Progress

We are relentlessly focused on results, academic gains, character development, and the outcomes that ultimately matter most for our students: graduating from high school and college, embarking on a career, and becoming self-sufficient and happy.

KIPP NYC students dramatically outpace their peers with respect to high school graduation, college matriculation, and college graduation.

2019 Results
Our ultimate goal is to have 75% of our students graduate from college.

Guiding Principles

KIPP NYC’s success is rooted in a few core principles that guide everything we do:

1: HIGH EXPECTATIONS

No two students are alike, but every child can learn. That’s why we raise the bar for our students and our teachers. Students excel when we instill in them the belief that they are capable of remarkable growth and when our team strives to find ways to reach each child.

2: FOCUS ON CHARACTER

Research shows that success in school and in life depends as much on character as it does academics. that’s why each school day, we focus on helping students develop character strengths like grit, self-control, gratitude, social intelligence, and curiosity.

3: HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHERS AND LEADERS

Children deserve great schools, and great schools require great, well-trained teachers and proven school leaders. We empower our educators to lead and we continually invest in training to help them grow into master teachers.

4: SAFE, STRUCTURED, NURTURING ENVIRONMENTS

Safe schools give students the space to take risks and learn from their triumphs and their mistakes. Our safe, structured, and nurturing environments minimize distractions and offer more time for academics and extracurriculars, so our students love school and maximize their learning.

5: KIPP THROUGH COLLEGE & CAREER

We stay with our kids from kindergarten through college graduation. KIPP counselors support students as they prepare for and select the right colleges and careers paths. After high school, advisors help alumni navigate the academic, social, and financial challenges they might encounter while in college or while pursuing a career.
