Building on our seven years of supporting aspiring new teachers through our Empire Fellows program, we’ve expanded our commitment with two career options that lead to full-time teaching roles and New York State certification.
HOW IT WORKS
- You’ll work with KIPP’s highest performing K-12 mentor teachers who consistently observe and provide actionable feedback to develop your teaching practice and nurture a growth mindset.
- You’ll participate in a summer new teacher development institute, attend weekly trainings on content and pedagogy, and deliberately practice critical teaching skills to prepare for a gradual on-ramp into more teaching responsibilities throughout the year.
- You’ll reflect and engage in school and regional workshops on race and equity in your work as a teacher and member of our school communities.
- You’ll build fellowship as part of a cohort of new teachers who have opportunities to connect, share experiences, celebrate successes, and provide peer support.
- You’ll receive ongoing professional development in Year Two and Three as part of KIPP’s commitment to develop and retain new teachers along with dedicated regional guidance in obtaining NYS certification.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attending a new teacher development institute over the summer.
- Engaging in workshops on issues of race and equity.
- Developing teaching skills through regular feedback and coaching from a skilled mentor
- Providing individual, small, and whole group instruction for students through gradual on-boarding.
- Leading or co-facilitating an advisory.
Engaging in regional, cohort, school, and content-based professional and personal development.
- Constantly assessing student progress and communicating results to families and colleagues.
- Modeling the school’s values in all communications with students, families, and staff.
- Zero years of full-time lead teaching experience.
- High level of organization and professionalism.
- Bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher (if currently in school, expected Bachelor’s degree by June 2020).
- Zest, grit, hope, social intelligence, gratitude, and a sense of humor.
- A passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture.
- Open to feedback and willing to constantly, reflect, improve, and learn.
- Desire and commitment to teach in a K-12 setting for at least two years after the first year of the residency.
- For candidates in Pathway One, commitment to obtaining a NYS Trans B Teaching Certificate by the midpoint of the residency year (by January 2021).
- For all candidates, commitment to obtaining a NYS Initial Certificate within two years.
- Proficiency in Spanish a plus.
- Do I need to have teaching experience to be eligible for the program?
No. This program is designed specifically for people with zero years of full-time lead teaching experience. Experience volunteering in a K-12 classroom or student teaching is helpful, but not necessary for eligibility.
- Do I need to be certified to be eligible for the program?
No. Most applicants to our program will not be certified. Applicants without NYS certification are eligible for Pathway One of the program, which includes enrollment in Relay Graduate School of Education’s MA in Teaching program. We expect that residents obtain Trans B certification in Year One and complete all requirements for NYS initial certification by Year Two.
- What is the timeline for applying to graduate school?
TIRs choosing option 1 should apply to Relay’s MA in Teaching Program after they have accepted their offer to join our residency program. KIPP NYC provides further guidance on the Relay application process upon acceptance of our offer. Please note that Relay does currently require candidates to take the GRE as part of their application process.
