Whitney Tilson Climbs the Northern Cascades in Support of KIPP NYC!

I’m climbing to raise money for my favorite charity, KIPP charter schools, to help thousands of KIPPsters on their even bigger climbs to and through college.

Over five days starting on Sunday, I’m going to scale three classic peaks in the Cascades in northern Washington with my guide.

Serving on KIPP NYC’s board for more than two decades, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative education the schools provide, so I’d be grateful if you’d help the 8,100 KIPPsters in NYC make it from kindergarten all the way through college. It’s a challenge that has become immeasurably harder thanks to the pandemic and its aftermath, so they need our help more than ever. I hope you’ll join me in supporting them.

Background

Over the past seven summers, I’ve raised more than half a million dollars by climbing five Alps giants (Mt. Blanc, the Matterhorn, Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch), Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites, The Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite, Mt. Whitney (the tallest mountain in the continental U.S.), and Mt. Shasta, which is in the Cascade Range, which extends from southern British Columbia to northern California (click here for pictures and descriptions of all my adventures).

This year, Paul Koubek, my professional guide, and I will tackle three peaks in the northern Cascades. Here’s our itinerary:

I fly to Seattle early on Sunday, August 27 where Paul will pick me up and we’ll drive three hours to the Mt. Baker ski area and hike four miles into Lake Ann, where we’ll set up camp. On Monday, we’ll climb Mt. Shuksan via the Fisher Chimneys, returning to Lake Ann – a long 12-14 hour day.

On Tuesday, we’ll hike out, drive 90 minutes, and hike into another area called Boston Basin. The next day, we’ll do another climb on the West Ridge of Forbidden which is listed among the 50 Classic Climbs of North America – another 12-hour day.

Lastly, on Thursday we’ll climb Sharkfin Tower, which is “only” eight hours.

Then we’ll hike out and drive back to Seattle, where I have a 7am flight home on Friday morning.

Phew!

Thanks again for your support!

Whitney

PS–Here I am wearing my KIPP shirt on the summit of my first peak, Mt. Blanc, on the 4th of July seven summers ago. I’ll be wearing the same shirt on this year’s climbs!

We are now accepting applications for all grades for the 2024-25 school year!
