Dear KIPP NYC Community –
As educators, our top priority is the physical and emotional safety of every student at KIPP. Across all our campuses and programs, there is nothing that the KIPP team and family takes more seriously.
With this goal in mind, we are writing to share with you that we have received two allegations of possible sexual misconduct that occurred over a decade ago. These allegations do not involve any current KIPP staff members or students.
We have reported these allegations to law enforcement and to conduct a thorough and independent investigation we retained the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, a firm with extensive experience investigating and addressing allegations of abuse.
We are sharing this information with you because we know this is a topic rarely spoken about openly and our hearts go out to any member of the KIPP community who has experienced abuse in any context. We want to encourage any KIPP team and family member to come forward if they have information, or seek support if they need it. Because any instance of abuse runs completely counter to the promises we make to every KIPPster, we also want to take this opportunity to explain the practices we have to ensure a safe environment for our students and prevent these incidents.
There are four critical components to our efforts to protect all our students from abuse:
- Informing parents, students, and staff how to report inappropriate physical or sexual behavior
- Educating and training our staff around proper conduct with students
- Providing support to any student or family experiencing or impacted by abuse
- Reporting allegations of sexual misconduct to the proper authorities

KIPP NYC teachers and staff receive training around the prevention of sexual misconduct and are educated regularly on how to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Our teachers and staff are also educated about how to identify and report any instance of suspected child abuse or sexual misconduct. This coming school year, we will once again address these important issues with our staff and provide on-going training.
This fall, we will also talk with all students in an age-appropriate way about this topic, and stress the importance of reporting to one of our social workers or principals any inappropriate physical or sexual behavior they experience or witness. You will receive further communication from your Principal before we do so. Our goal is that every KIPP student always feels safe, well-cared for, and comfortable coming forward with concerns, questions, or if they feel something inappropriate has occurred.
Finally, we also know that sexual harassment and abuse is a problem faced in society at large. KIPP has an experienced team of social workers on staff that provides support to students or parents who have experienced abuse in any context. If you or your child needs support or resources please contact your school’s social worker or principal.
The safety and well-being of your child, and every KIPPster, remains our highest priority. We are dedicated to helping all members of our KIPP community – students, families, alumni, and staff – feel safe and secure.

Como educadores, nuestra máxima prioridad es la seguridad física y emocional de cada estudiante en KIPP. En nuestras escuelas y programas, no hay nada que tomamos más en serio.
Con este objetivo en mente, les queremos compartir que hemos recibido dos acusaciones de posible conducta sexual inapropiada que ocurrió hace más de diez años. Estas acusaciones no implican a ningún empleado o estudiante corriente.
Le hemos reportado estas acusaciones a las autoridades y, con el objetivo de llevar a cabo una investigación independiente e exhaustiva, hemos retenido a la firma de Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, un bufete de abogados con amplia experiencia en la investigación y manejo de denuncias de abuso.
Estamos compartiendo esta información con ustedes porque este es un tema del cual no se habla con transparencia. Nuestros corazones están con cualquier miembro de nuestra comunidad que ha sido víctima de abuso en cualquier contexto. Queremos pedirle a cualquier miembro de la comunidad de KIPP de compartir información si la tienen o de buscar apoyo emocional si lo necesitan. Todo caso de abuso corre absolutamente en contra a las promesas que le hemos hecho a cada KIPPster. Por lo tanto, también queremos tomar esta oportunidad para explicarles las normas y prácticas que tenemos en todas nuestras escuelas para prevenir estos incidentes y asegurar un ambiente sano y salvo.
Tenemos cuatro componentes críticos en nuestro programa de protección contra abuso de nuestros estudiantes:
- Informar a los padres, estudiantes, y personal como reportar comportamiento físico o sexual inapropiado.
- Educar y capacitar a nuestro personal sobre cómo mantener conducta apropiada con todos los estudiantes.
- Proveer apoyo emocional a cualquier estudiante o familia que se ha visto afectado por abuso.
- Reportar denuncias de conducta sexual inapropiada a las autoridades competentes.

Todo el personal de KIPP NYC recibe capacitación profesional sobre prevención de conducta sexual inapropiada y también recibe educación regular sobre cómo mantener límites profesionales apropiados. Nuestro personal también recibe educación sobre cómo identificar y reportar cualquier caso de sospecha de abuso infantil o conducta sexual inapropiada. En este año escolar nos vamos de nuevo a enfocar con todo el personal sobre estos asuntos tan importantes y continuaremos proporcionándoles capacitación y formación al respecto.
Este otoño, también hablaremos con todos los estudiantes (de forma apropiada para su edad) y les enfatizaremos la importancia de reportar a uno de nuestros trabajadores sociales o directores cualquier comportamiento físico o sexual inapropiado que ellos sufran o del cual sean testigos. Su director le mandara más información al respecto antes de que empecemos estas conversaciones. Nuestro objetivo es que cada estudiante de KIPP siempre se sienta seguro, bien cuidado, y cómodo presentándose con sus preocupaciones y preguntas o si sienten que algo inapropiado ha ocurrido.
Por último, también sabemos que el acoso y el abuso sexual son problemas que afrontan a nuestra sociedad. KIPP tiene trabajadores sociales con experiencia que proporcionan apoyo a estudiantes o familias que hayan sido víctimas de abuso en cualquier contexto. Si usted o su familia necesitan apoyo o recursos, por favor comuníquense con un trabajador social o el director de su colegio.
