Meet the KIPP NYC Team and Family
Hear from some of our teachers
Reginald Greene
5th Grade Math Teacher, KIPP AMP
With KIPP NYC since 2006
Why did you join KIPP?
I was a second-year Teach For America corps member, and my Program Director said I should go to a KIPP function. I learned that you get more control over your classroom and that teachers could create curriculum for the school. KIPP really cared about the kids. They’re really serious about it. I also really liked the cultural curriculum theme, such as dance, orchestra, and capoeira, as well as the character piece of every school.
What keeps you at KIPP?
The kids’ smiles make it worth it. There’s such a high engagement level, and you’re able to see real progress. Within three months, I could see gains from a second to a fourth grade level. The energy from the kids feeds teachers’ energy.
How is teaching at a KIPP school different from teaching at your previous school?
We have multiple people all working together to achieve a common goal.
Why should teachers consider teaching at a KIPP school?
Long-term goals can be reached, and you can see students on to at least high school and then hopefully on to college. You have the ability to impact kids long-term. Every day I learn something and have gotten better. What other job is there like that? You own this job. Everything that happens in your classroom is because of you. You create it, you own it, you learn more about it every day.
