Meet the KIPP NYC Team and Family
Hear from some of our teachers
Carolyn Leuner
8th Grade Science Teacher, KIPP STAR
With KIPP NYC since 2004
Why did you join KIPP?
I was a kindergarten teacher, and at the end of the year, my kids were ahead. However, when they went to first grade, some fell. It was discouraging that they plateaued instead of continuing to grow. I knew that KIPP recruited teachers who were invested in kids and were constantly trying to push education to a higher level.
What keeps you at KIPP?
The kids inspire me on a daily basis. They are constantly making sacrifices that kids their age don’t usually make to better and further their education. It inspires me to make more sacrifices and give more for them. Their energy, character, and charisma engage me and make me want to ensure their success. Their questions, constant inquiry as to why things work, and how things are the way they are inspire me to teach more so they can figure it out on their own.
How is teaching at a KIPP school different from teaching at your previous school?
I get a lot of support from administrators. I am able to have the resources I need for activities so the kids can continue to grow. I am surrounded by colleagues that are constantly pushing me to be a better person. KIPP kids expect nothing less than the best teachers and push you to be great.
Why should teachers consider teaching at a KIPP school?
It will push you professionally to be a better teacher and to learn how to network with other cross-curricular teachers. It forces you to open your door to improve yourself and other teachers. You are constantly challenged to teach better and help kids get into great colleges and life beyond. Teaching is for a greater purpose, and everyone is united on that mission. When there are thirty people pushing for the same thing, results are easier to achieve.
