Teacher YOU

Because we know that effective teachers are essential to help students succeed, KIPP NYC is committed to attracting and training outstanding teachers. As a strategy for teacher training, the new Teacher YOU institute provides teachers with relevant, top-notch professional development, leading to certification and a master’s in education.

Teacher YOU is a collaboration of three charter school networks—Achievement First, KIPP, and Uncommon Schools—and the Hunter College School of Education, and much of its initial funding was raised by the Robin Hood Foundation.

Teacher YOU integrates coursework with participants’ ongoing experiences teaching. The program focuses on the needs of teachers in urban public schools. It builds their knowledge and skills in classroom management, the effective planning and execution of lessons, and assessment, as well as building relationships with students, families, and communities. Teachers earn a master’s degree based upon both the completion of their coursework and the demonstrated achievement of their students.

Teacher YOU was launched in the summer of 2007 as a pilot program with 40 teachers from Achievement First, KIPP, and Uncommon Schools. In the summer of 2008, the second cohort of 80-100 teachers from these and other charter schools in New York City will enter the program.
